Keynote address – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander futures: more than closing the gap

The tireless work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the alcohol and other drugs sector continues to inspire. In the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, the strength, knowledge and determination of our people remains firm.

Drawing on experience at state and national public sector level, as well as national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, the question of addressing alcohol and other drugs as a priority for the nation will be discussed.

The need for a paradigm shift in policymaking will also be discussed. Policymaking processes must value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges; place Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership, institutions and solutions at their centre; and reset the power balance between those making the decisions and those for whom policies and programs are intended. Results follow when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ develop and control their futures.
